China's Shenzhou-23 mission cultivates two generations of rice in space
China's Shenzhou-23 crew—astronauts Chu Yangchu, Chang Qiyuan and Li Qiying—have spent more than two months aboard the Tiangong space station and remain in good health. During this period they have advanced a series of scientific experiments, most notably the first continuous two‑generation growth of rice in orbit.
The experiment uses Japonica rice seeds, including a batch that has never been to space and a batch derived from seeds flown on the 2022 mission that produced three generations on Earth. The astronauts harvested the first rice samples, stored them at –80 °C, and will return them to Earth for analysis of genetic stability and environmental adaptability under long‑term microgravity. The work aims to provide a model for future space agriculture and in‑situ food production on deep‑space missions.
