China's Universities Drive Regional Development and Theory Innovation

Academic analyses highlight how Chinese higher‑education institutions are being repositioned as engines of regional growth and sources of independent theoretical innovation. Yan Chunhua, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and former president of Lanzhou University, argues that universities must undergo structural, model and system reforms to address persistent geographic imbalances and to deepen symbiotic ties with local economies. He cites examples such as the integration of university disciplines with regional industries and the creation of innovation hubs like the Xi’an Jiaotong University “Innovation Port”.

Jiang Kai, dean of the School of Education at Peking University, together with associate professor Zhu Yanzhen, examines the internal academic mechanisms and external policy supports needed to boost the autonomy of higher‑education theory innovation. They call for coordinated reforms of scholarly evaluation, greater alignment of research with local needs, and a balanced blend of domestic and international perspectives to build a distinctive Chinese knowledge system.
