China's vehicle fleet hits 4.76 billion, EVs now 13% of cars

The Ministry of Public Security reports that by the end of June 2026 China’s total motor vehicle stock reached 4.76 billion units, including 3.71 billion cars. The number of licensed drivers rose to 5.67 billion, with 5.33 billion holding car licences.

New registrations in the first half of 2026 totaled 15.81 million vehicles – 10.51 million cars and 5.11 million motorcycles. Electric vehicles (EVs) numbered 4.897 million, representing 13.19% of all cars, and pure‑electric models accounted for 68.77% of the EV stock. EVs comprised 49.42% of new car registrations, with 519.5 thousand units added.

Nine cities now have more than five million cars each. Hangzhou’s car fleet surpassed 5 million, overtaking Wuhan, while Chengdu, Chongqing and Beijing each exceed six million. Other cities above the five‑million mark include Zhengzhou, Suzhou, Shanghai, Xi’an and the newly‑ranked Hangzhou.

Vehicle transfer registrations reached 1.852 million, including 1.705 million car transfers, and inter‑regional second‑hand car transactions rose 11.98% to 345 thousand. Online services processed 55.66 million licence and registration requests, up 3.17%.
