China's Yaogan-50-02 satellite fragments in orbit

The Chinese reconnaissance satellite Yaogan-50-02 has fragmented in orbit, creating a significant amount of space debris. According to astronomer Jonathan McDowell, the satellite broke into approximately 43 distinct pieces of debris.

The fragments are distributed at altitudes between 598 and 1,100 kilometers. Because of this high altitude, the debris poses a long-term risk; NASA data indicates that while debris below 600 kilometers may re-enter the atmosphere within years, debris at 800 kilometers can persist for hundreds of years, and fragments above 1,000 kilometers may remain in orbit for thousands of years.

The exact cause of the fragmentation remains unknown, though possibilities include a battery or propulsion system failure, or a collision with another object. The incident adds to the estimated 1.5 million pieces of space debris currently orbiting Earth, increasing the risk of a chain reaction of collisions.
