The practice has sparked huge online attention: the hashtag “sharing a bed is a hardship beyond my comprehension” amassed more than 14 million views on Weibo, related videos on Douyin drew nearly 40 million views, and searches on Xiaohongshu returned over 37,000 posts. Though still a niche among China’s roughly 260 million renters, it reflects growing financial pressure on young workers.
Experts such as Mingwei Liu of Rutgers University warn the trend could curb household spending, property demand and marriage rates. Data this month showed China’s economic growth slowing to its weakest level in more than three years, with strong exports but flat domestic consumption. Similar cost‑cutting measures have been reported in Beijing and by other workers such as 39‑year‑old Morgan Pan, who reduced his rent to about 1,200 yuan per month.
