China's youth unemployment crisis fuels global protests
Official data show the urban youth unemployment rate in China rose to 15.6% in May, more than three times the overall national rate of about 5%. Economists link the surge to an oversupply of graduates and accelerating adoption of artificial intelligence, which is reducing entry‑level positions. As Gol Henzeke, a senior lecturer at University College London, notes, “where businesses accelerate AI adoption, youth jobs are highly exposed.”
The worsening outlook has sparked demonstrations in Kenya, Peru, Nepal, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Africa and Morocco, with students demanding better job prospects. In India, economic frustration contributed to the rapid rise of the “Cockroach Janta Party,” a movement that began as an online meme and gained national attention. Europe’s hardest‑hit nations are Germany and Austria, where young people face similar hiring slowdowns. The phenomenon underscores growing economic and social challenges that governments and the private sector must address worldwide.
