Chinchilla care and lifespan considerations

Chinchillas are delicate rodents native to the Andes Mountains that require specialized care to ensure their well-being. Due to their thin rib cages and fragile skeletal structures, squeezing or rough handling is extremely dangerous and can result in broken ribs, internal injuries, or death.

While the average lifespan for a chinchilla is between 10 and 15 years, the oldest documented chinchilla lived to be 29 years old. Longevity is influenced by genetics, diet, environment, and veterinary care. Key care requirements include a diet of high-quality pellets and Timothy hay, a cool and dry environment to prevent heatstroke, and regular mental stimulation.
