Chinchilla care and physiological requirements

Chinchillas are highly specialized rodents native to the Andes Mountains that require specific care due to their unique physiological and emotional needs. Their respiratory systems are adapted for high-altitude, oxygen-scarce environments, making them sensitive to environmental factors like dust, humidity, and air quality.

As pets, they demand significant commitment. They possess delicate skeletal structures, including fragile ribs and spines, which makes activities like walking them on a leash strongly discouraged. They are also highly sensitive to stress and can exhibit emotional states resembling depression.

Successful ownership requires maintaining specialized housing, specific dietary nutrition, and a controlled environment to prevent overheating or respiratory distress.
