Chinchilla care: Bedding requirements and elimination habits

Proper care for chinchillas involves managing their habitat and understanding their natural biological habits. To maintain a healthy environment, cage bedding should be safe, absorbent, and dust-free. Recommended options include fleece liners or kiln-dried pine shavings, as improper substrates can lead to respiratory issues or skin problems due to the animal's dense fur.

Regarding elimination, chinchillas do not typically use a designated toilet area. Instead, they produce frequent, small, dry, and relatively odorless fecal pellets as a result of a high-fiber diet. While they may appear to poop in concentrated areas near food or play zones, their elimination is often distributed throughout their environment.
