Chinchilla care: Dietary restrictions and waste management
Chinchillas require specific dietary and environmental management to maintain health. They should not consume peppers, as the high sugar and moisture content can lead to life-threatening gastrointestinal stasis, bloat, or diarrhea. Additionally, capsaicin found in hot peppers is toxic to the animals.
Regarding waste management, chinchilla urine contains ammonia as a byproduct of protein metabolism. While concentrations are typically lower than in other species, owners must ensure proper cage cleaning and ventilation to prevent ammonia buildup, which can cause respiratory issues.
