Chinchilla care: Dietary risks and bite management
Chinchillas require a specialized diet primarily consisting of high-fiber grasses and hay to maintain their health. Because their digestive systems are delicate, they should not consume dry cereal regularly. The high sugar and carbohydrate content in cereal, along with various additives, can lead to serious health issues such as diabetes.
Regarding behavior, chinchilla bites are typically not motivated by aggression but are instead reactions to fear, confusion, pain, stress, or teething. If bitten, owners should immediately wash the wound with soap and water to prevent infection and assess the severity of the injury.
