Chinchillas, native to the high‑altitude Andes, thrive in cool, dry environments and are prone to overheating. Their ideal temperature range is 55 °F to 70 °F (13 °C‑21 °C); temperatures above 75 °F (24 °C) can cause heat stress, with symptoms such as lethargy, rapid breathing, ear redness, drooling and seizures. Owners should keep cages in a well‑ventilated area, avoid direct sunlight, provide cool water and immediate veterinary care if overheating occurs.

Stress in chinchillas manifests through behavioral changes like fur slipping, excessive chewing of cage bars, altered vocalizations, reduced activity, and hiding. Common stressors include rapid temperature shifts, loud noises, cramped housing, lack of enrichment, poor diet, and social isolation. To reduce stress, maintain stable temperatures, offer a spacious cage with enrichment items, ensure constant access to hay and appropriate chew toys, and monitor for signs of illness.
