Chinchilla care requirements for hygiene and safety

Chinchillas require specific care routines regarding hygiene and environmental management. Because of their extremely dense fur, regular brushing is not recommended as it can damage follicles, cause bald spots, or create uncomfortable static electricity. Instead, chinchillas should be provided with dust baths two to four times per week to mimic their natural Andean habitat and absorb excess oils.

When leaving chinchillas unattended, owners must manage significant risks. These animals are highly sensitive to heat, with temperatures exceeding 80°F (27°C) being potentially fatal. Proper care during absences requires ensuring constant access to fresh hay, pellets, and reliable water sources, as well as providing mental stimulation to prevent stress and destructive behavior.
