Chinchilla care: Understanding grooming, hygiene, and behavior
Chinchillas possess unique physiological and behavioral traits that require specialized care. Their exceptionally dense fur, featuring 60-80 hairs per follicle, makes them highly susceptible to matting. This can be caused by high humidity, debris, or lack of cleanliness. To maintain hygiene and prevent fungal infections, chinchillas rely on dust baths rather than water to absorb oils and dirt.
Behaviorally, chinchillas communicate through various vocalizations and physical actions. Signs of anger or stress include barking, teeth chattering, or high-pitched screaming. Additionally, both male and female chinchillas may engage in urine spraying as a method of territory marking, social communication, or defense, though it is frequently observed in females during mating rituals or as a defensive mechanism.
