Chinchilla Heat Sensitivity and Fur Loss Risks Highlight Pet Care Guidelines

Chinchillas, native to the cool, dry Andes, are extremely vulnerable to high temperatures. Their dense fur (60‑80 hairs per follicle) and lack of sweat glands make heat dissipation difficult, leading to heatstroke at temperatures as low as 80°F (27°C). The recommended ambient range for pet chinchillas is 60‑75°F (15‑24°C) with low humidity.

Fur pulling, also known as fur slip or barbering, often signals stress or environmental problems. Common triggers include temperatures above 80°F, high humidity, loud noises, sudden changes in the cage or surroundings, poor cage hygiene, nutritional deficiencies, fungal infections such as ringworm, and occasional parasites. Maintaining a cool, dry habitat, providing a balanced diet of pellets, hay and occasional treats, and ensuring proper hygiene can help prevent both overheating and fur loss.
