Chinchilla Indoor Care and Temperament Guide
Chinchillas can thrive indoors when owners maintain a cool, climate‑controlled room (60‑75 °F or 15‑24 °C) and provide a large, multi‑level cage with solid flooring. Essential needs include regular dust baths with special chinchilla dust, safe chewable items, enrichment toys, and bedding free of cedar or pine shavings. Prevent overheating, protect wires and cables, and ensure ample space to run and jump.
With patience and early socialisation, chinchillas can show affection. Signs include approaching the cage edge, taking treats, gentle nipping, climbing onto a person, and soft chirping. While they are not as cuddly as dogs or cats, consistent gentle handling and a stress‑free environment encourage a bond between pet and owner.
