Chinchilla Species and Their Natural Predators in the Andes

Chinchillas, native to the rocky, arid mountains of the Andes, are vulnerable to a range of natural predators. Birds of prey such as eagles, hawks and owls hunt them from above, taking advantage of the rodents' small size and crepuscular activity.

Two species are recognised: the long‑tailed *Chinchilla lanigera*, which is common in the pet trade, and the short‑tailed *Chinchilla chinchilla*, a critically endangered form that survives only in a few protected areas. The name “chinchilla” derives from the Chincha people of Peru, who prized the animal’s soft fur for clothing and status symbols.
