Chinese Academy of Sciences researchers discover individual neurons perform complex calculations
Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences have found experimental evidence that individual neurons possess the capacity to execute complex calculations to make adaptive decisions based on context. The study, published in the journal Science, reveals that dendrites—the branched structures of neurons—do not merely transmit impulses but actively integrate sensory information with previously learned rules to guide behavior.
Previously, neuroscience models focused cognitive processing on networks of multiple neurons. However, this research demonstrates advanced computation at a unicellular scale. To test this, a team led by Xu Ninglong studied mice trained to react to specific sound frequencies in the auditory cortex. By periodically modifying reward criteria, researchers used imaging techniques to observe how the dendrites of pyramidal neurons adjusted the animal's responses. When these dendritic structures were inhibited, the rodents lost the ability to adapt their decisions to new rules.
Researchers suggest that understanding this functional principle could lead to the design of more efficient artificial intelligence architectures capable of adapting to changing environments, though further studies are needed to determine how this system operates in other cognitive processes and higher species.
