Chinese actresses see supporting roles overshadow lead characters

In Chinese television dramas, several instances have occurred where supporting actresses have garnered more audience attention and favor than the lead actresses due to character depth, acting, or personality.

In the series ‘Diamond Lover’, Tang Yan’s character, Meiduo, faced criticism for being portrayed as overly naive, whereas Dilraba Dilmurat’s supporting character, Gao Wen, was praised for being a more grounded and loyal friend.

Additionally, in ‘The Longest Promise’, Dilraba Dilmurat played the lead role of Li Changge, but her performance and character styling faced scrutiny. In contrast, Zhao Lusi, playing a supporting role as Li Luoyan, reportedly won more audience sympathy through a more natural portrayal of her character’s internal emotions.
