Chinese AI firms challenge US dominance with low‑cost models

Chinese technology companies—including Alibaba Group, Moonshot AI, ByteDance, DeepSeek and Z.ai—have launched advanced generative‑AI models such as Qwen 3.8‑Max, Kimi K3, Seedance 2.5 and V4 Flash. Benchmarks show these systems can match or surpass leading US models like Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 while costing as little as US$0.03 per intensive workload compared with US$3.15 for the American counterpart.

The rapid progress and aggressive pricing have alarmed Silicon Valley and the US administration. The Trump government is weighing export bans on Chinese AI chips and possible sanctions on firms it accuses of intellectual‑property theft. At the same time, major US tech players—including Microsoft, Nvidia, Palantir, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk—have urged regulators not to block Chinese models, warning that restrictions could stifle competition and concentrate power in a few domestic labs.
