Chinese AI Founder Yang Zhilin Returns Home, Highlighting Growing Talent Shift

Yang Zhilin, a 34‑year‑old Chinese AI researcher, left a career in the United States to found Moonshot AI in China and recently unveiled the company's Kimi K3 model, which the firm touts as comparable to leading U.S. systems. Yang studied at Carnegie Mellon University under prominent AI scholars and previously worked in the U.S. before deciding to return to China, citing entrepreneurial conviction.

His move is being presented by Chinese state media as evidence of a broader trend: an increasing number of Chinese scientists and engineers are opting to come back after U.S. training. A Stanford survey of more than 1,300 Chinese‑descent researchers in the U.S. found that 73 % felt unsafe and 65 % cited anti‑Asian hate as a concern. According to Stanford’s Hoover Institution, about 70 % of Chinese researchers with U.S. experience eventually return to China, and over half of those behind DeepSeek’s core models never left the country. The Global Times highlighted the return of talent like Yang as a sign that China’s own academic and research infrastructure is becoming a preferred destination, noting that 380,000 international students were enrolled in Chinese universities for the 2024‑25 academic year.
