Chinese AI models see surge in global token usage

Chinese AI models are rapidly gaining market share in terms of token usage on developer platforms, even as American frontier models maintain a lead in total expenditure. Data from OpenRouter and Vercel indicate a significant surge in the adoption of Chinese models; for instance, Chinese model token usage on OpenRouter rose from approximately 6–13% in February to 57–67% by mid-September.

This shift is primarily driven by cost-efficiency and improved performance in specific tasks like coding. Companies are increasingly turning to open-weight models to manage skyrocketing AI costs. While high-complexity tasks still rely on expensive American frontier models, businesses like AT&T and Tinder are utilizing more affordable open-weight alternatives to handle high-volume workloads and maintain data security.

The rise of Chinese AI models has prompted scrutiny in Washington regarding national security and technological competition. Concerns include the potential for geopolitical alignment through technology adoption and the ability of Chinese firms to bypass chip export controls via model distillation or remote access to hardware.
