Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong faces extended maintenance
The Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong may remain in dry dock until early 2027. Recent satellite imagery and open-source data from October 2 indicate the vessel is still undergoing maintenance at the Yulin naval base on Hainan Island.
This extended period of inactivity follows a high operational tempo throughout 2025, during which the Shandong and Liaoning frequently deployed together in the western Pacific. While the Shandong is sidelined, the Liaoning remains active, having been spotted conducting exercises in the Yellow Sea after missions in the South China Sea.
Simultaneously, China is advancing its naval capabilities with the Fujian, which is currently undergoing sea trials. The Fujian features advanced electromagnetic catapults, representing a significant technological leap for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) compared to traditional ski-jump systems.
