Chinese authorities detain Falun Gong members, leading to death of 83‑year‑old Liu Huiju

In July 2025, 83‑year‑old Liu Huiju, a Falun Gong practitioner from Shuangyashan, Heilongjiang, was forcibly taken by police, taken to a hospital for a check‑up, and then transferred to a women’s prison. Over the next nine months she was hospitalized four times and died on 7 May 2026 while incarcerated.

In July 2026, four Falun Gong practitioners in Liaoning – retired teacher Chen Hong, farmer Wang Junhui, former factory worker Guan Qiuping and nurse Li Ying – were abducted by officers from Shenyang and surrounding districts, detained without legal cause, and transferred to Shenyang First Detention Center. The authorities seized personal items and books, and the detainees remain in custody pending criminal proceedings.
