European EV market grows as Chinese brands expand in Norway

The European automotive market is undergoing a significant shift toward electrification. In the European Union, new car registrations increased by 5.3% through August 2026. Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) now account for 21.7% of the market, while hybrid vehicles remain the most popular segment with a 36.6% share.

In Norway, where electric vehicles represent 97.8% of new registrations, Chinese-owned brands like BYD, NIO, and Dongfeng have seen rapid growth, capturing approximately 25% of the EV market in the first half of 2026. This commercial success occurs despite rising consumer skepticism; a survey of 15,000 EV owners found that 31% would avoid Chinese brands for political reasons, up from 23% the previous year. Concerns primarily center on data security and privacy, following previous reports of vehicles transmitting data to China.

Conversely, political resistance to Tesla in Norway has declined, falling from 43% to 24% over the past year. While Chinese manufacturers are gaining ground in Europe, traditional manufacturers face challenges, including high energy costs and increased competition from lower-cost Chinese models.
