Chinese automakers expand presence in Australian market
Chinese automotive manufacturers are significantly expanding their presence in the Australian market. Great Wall Motor (GWM) has emerged as a major player, selling 52,000 vehicles in Australia last year, a period during which traditional manufacturers like Toyota, Ford, and Nissan saw declining sales.
Further expansion is indicated by the potential Australian launch of the Wuling brand, a joint venture between General Motors and SAIC Motor. The Wuling Eksion EV, a mid-size electric SUV, has appeared in the Australian Design Rule certification database. While specific distribution details remain unconfirmed, the brand's Indonesian arm has expressed intentions to explore exporting vehicles to Australia.
The shift is driven by competitive pricing and advanced technology, offering Australian consumers more features at accessible price points as the country's domestic passenger car manufacturing has ceased.
