Global EV markets see rapid growth in China, UK, Germany, and India

The global electric vehicle (EV) market is undergoing significant shifts across major regions. In China, new energy vehicle (NEV) penetration reached a record 65.1% of total retail passenger car sales in July 2026. Domestic brands led this surge with an 83.8% penetration rate, while luxury vehicle NEV penetration stood at 30.9%. Although July retail sales of NEVs saw a 3.9% year-on-year decline to 951,000 units, production rose by 25.6% year-on-year in July.

In the United Kingdom, the second-hand EV market experienced a major boost. Used battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales jumped 67% in the second quarter of 2026, reaching 110,761 units. This growth helped the overall UK used car market rise by 0.7%, with EVs now accounting for a record 5.5% of all used car transactions.

Germany also reported strong adoption, with the second quarter seeing its highest quarterly growth in EV adoption since 2020. Approximately 12% of private insured drivers transitioned from combustion engines to electric models. The German used EV market share also doubled compared to the previous year, reaching 7.9%.

India is seeing rapid growth in the EV sector, with electric passenger vehicle retail sales rising 79% year-on-year in the first half of 2026, totaling 148,023 units. This growth outpaced strong hybrids, which recorded 57,885 units in the same period.
