Chinese automotive brands reshape Italian distribution landscape

The expansion of Chinese automotive brands into Italy is reshaping the country's distribution landscape. While the Italian market remains relatively stable with approximately 1.5 million registrations, it is becoming increasingly fragmented and selective as new players enter the field.

Research indicates significant consumer interest, with an Areté survey suggesting three out of four Italians would consider purchasing a Chinese vehicle. The number of Chinese brands in Italy is growing; the New Brand Observatory 2026 by Quintegia notes 22 new brands are currently present, compared to 18 in 2025, with projections suggesting at least 33 brands by 2030.

For Italian dealers, these brands present both a risk and an opportunity. While they offer competitive pricing and advanced technology, representing these manufacturers adds complexity to the business. Italy has already become a European laboratory for this shift, hosting approximately 1,500 points of sale dedicated to emerging brands, a figure higher than in the UK, Spain, Germany, or France. Notable brands contributing to this change include BYD, Leapmotor, OMODA, and Jaecoo.
