Chinese automotive industry faces rapid launch cycles and vehicle recalls

The Chinese automotive industry is experiencing an unprecedented acceleration in product launches. Data indicates that 542 new models were introduced in the Chinese market between January and May 2026, averaging approximately 3.6 models per day. This rapid pace has seen development cycles shrink from 36 months to roughly 18 months, with software testing and battery durability assessments also being significantly shortened. Experts express concern that critical quality control and safety testing phases may be compromised to meet competitive demands.

In a related development regarding vehicle safety, Geely has initiated a recall of over 74,000 Lynk & Co vehicles in China due to LiDAR system defects. The issue involves a potential power IC failure within the LiDAR unit, which could lead to inadequate object recognition or warnings during assisted driving, posing safety risks in extreme conditions. The recall affects models including the 900, 10 EM-P, 07, and 08. Lynk & Co Vietnam has stated that the models distributed in the Vietnamese market are not affected by this specific recall campaign.
