Chinese Basketball Association apologizes for Jones Cup format controversy

The Chinese Basketball Association has issued an apology following controversy surrounding the tournament format of the 45th William Jones Cup. The dispute centers on a special clause that guarantees the advancement of the ‘Chinese Blue’ team to the semi-finals to ensure local fans can watch the national representative team compete in the final stages.

This rule has drawn heavy criticism because the Chinese Blue team, composed of an Asian Games training squad, has struggled with injuries and a lack of key players, resulting in a 1-4 record that places them at the bottom of their group. Meanwhile, the defending champions from the Philippines, SGA, hold a superior 4-1 record but face the possibility of being eliminated from the semi-finals due to the specific tournament structure.

The Association explained that the new double-round-robin format was originally designed to reduce consecutive playing days and minimize injury risks. However, they acknowledged that the current implementation has caused significant debate and failed to provide all participating teams with an equal opportunity to compete for advancement. The Association stated they will review and optimize the scheduling and rules for next year's event.
