Chinese Battery Makers Capture Over 70% of Global EV and Storage Markets

Data from SNE Research shows that Chinese firms dominated the global electric‑vehicle battery market in the first five months of 2026, with CATL holding a 40.2% share and BYD 14.4%. Seven Chinese companies together accounted for 72.6% of worldwide EV‑battery installations, which reached 469.2 GWh, a 16.3% increase year‑on‑year.

Wood Mackenzie reports that Chinese battery‑energy‑storage‑system (BESS) integrators held 76% of the global market in 2025, occupying eight of the top‑ten positions. Tesla remained the leading integrator, while BYD rose to third place. The report notes upcoming U.S. tax‑credit rules that will limit the share of Chinese‑origin components in qualified projects, and highlights similar regulatory pressures in Europe and the Middle East.

These trends underscore China’s expanding influence across both EV batteries and large‑scale energy‑storage deployments worldwide.
