CATL and BYD advance solid-state battery development
Chinese battery manufacturers CATL and BYD are accelerating the development of solid-state battery technology. CATL aims to begin small-series production of these cells on pilot lines by 2027. BYD has also targeted 2027 for pilot production and has filed six new patents covering various aspects of solid-state cell manufacturing and chemistry.
In the regulatory sphere, the European Union plans to implement mandatory digital battery passports by 2027. This system will use QR codes to provide data on a battery's model, performance, durability, and recycling capabilities, helping to track health and aging in the used electric vehicle market.
In the energy storage sector, Ford has introduced a new grid-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) container. The unit features a rated energy capacity of 5.45MWh and a cell capacity of 512Ah, positioning it within the competitive high-capacity market.
