Chinese bicycle brands disrupt market using shared supply chains
An investigation into the carbon fiber bicycle frame supply chain reveals that major Western brands and direct-to-consumer Chinese brands often utilize the same manufacturing facilities. Key producers such as XDS Carbon Tech, Topkey, Quest Composite Technology, and Ten-Tech Composites manufacture frames for both high-end Western labels and emerging Chinese competitors.
Topkey, which is based in Taiwan with production in China, reportedly accounts for over 25% of the global carbon frame market and produces for brands including Specialized and Cannondale. Chinese brands like Winspace and Yoeleo utilize a different business model, selling directly online without the overhead of traditional distributors, showrooms, or professional cycling sponsorships. This allows them to offer products at significantly lower price points. For example, while a Trek Madone may cost approximately $12,000, a Winspace T1600 frameset ranges between $2,400 and $2,850. Independent aerodynamic testing has indicated that some Chinese models achieve up to 98% of the performance seen in flagship Western aerodynamic bicycles.
