Chinese car brands capture nearly 20% of Norway's new car market

The Norwegian automotive market is seeing a significant shift toward electric vehicles and Chinese brands. According to analysis from the Opplysningsrådet for veitrafikken (OFV), Chinese brands now account for 19.4 percent of new car sales among private individuals this year, up from 10.4 percent in 2024. These brands are primarily attracting customers from European manufacturers, with 48 percent of Chinese car buyers previously owning a European brand.

In contrast, Tesla maintains high customer loyalty, with 72.8 percent of existing Tesla owners choosing the brand again for their next vehicle.

Data from FINN.no also highlights the rapid pace of electrification in the used car market. In September, electric vehicles accounted for 37 percent of all cars marked as sold on the platform. Following fuel tax changes on September 1, search interest for electric vehicles surged by 44 percent overnight, while interest in diesel and petrol vehicles declined. The average price for a used electric vehicle stood at 340,233 NOK.
