Chinese car brands gain market share in UK leasing sector
New data from Select Car Leasing indicates a significant shift in the UK vehicle leasing market, with electric vehicles (EVs) now accounting for 39% of all leases, up from 32% in 2025. Conversely, the market share for petrol vehicles has declined from 35% to 29% over the same period.
Chinese manufacturers are increasingly prominent in the top 10 most leased models. The Jaecoo 7, a brand under Chery International, is currently the most popular leased vehicle, holding a 25% market share. Other Chinese brands appearing in the top 10 include the BYD Seal and the Leapmotor C10 EV.
Geoff Cockerill, Director of Operations at Select Car Leasing, noted that the growing influence of Chinese manufacturers reflects a landscape where competitive pricing and special offers often outweigh traditional brand loyalty. While established manufacturers like Kia, Volkswagen, and Nissan remain in the top rankings, the data highlights a reshaping of the sector.
