Spain and Mexico see record growth in electric and hybrid vehicle sales

The Spanish automotive sector hosted the inaugural Aucon congress on autonomous and connected vehicles in Zaragoza, bringing together manufacturers, tech firms and regulators. In the same period, Chinese brands Omoda and Jaecoo recorded 19,798 registrations in Spain, surpassing Citroën, Nissan and Ford and setting a new benchmark of over 10,000 hybrid units sold in 2026. Hybrid plug‑in sales now account for a growing share of the market, with the SHS technology representing 61.5% of Omoda & Jaecoo’s June sales.

In Mexico, electric and plug‑in hybrid vehicle sales reached a record 53,430 units in the first half of 2026, a 22% increase over the previous year, while public and private charging points grew 45% and 56% respectively. The sector created more than 30,000 jobs.

Stellantis reported a 3.8% rise in EU‑30 sales, and BMW’s global electric vehicle sales slipped 4.9% but saw a 5.2% rise in Q2 2026. Spain’s bus industry prepared for the FIAA 2026 fair amid a 2.55% rise in passenger numbers. The Spanish vehicle‑registration system will shift to the “P” series after summer, signalling market health.
