Chinese Communist Party to hold fifth plenary session in October
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) will hold the fifth plenary session of its XX Central Committee in Beijing from October 26 to 29. The meeting, scheduled by the Politburo during a session presided over by General Secretary Xi Jinping, will focus on strengthening internal party discipline.
The Politburo reviewed a proposal regarding the continuous advancement of strict and comprehensive party governance. Following consultations with various sectors and regions, the body agreed to refine the document before submitting it to the plenary session. The proposal aims to enhance the party’s long-term governing capacity, preserve its “purity,” and maintain its “link with the people” through mechanisms of “self-purification” and “self-improvement.”
This session occurs amidst an ongoing anti-corruption campaign led by Xi Jinping. Recent reports indicate that disciplinary bodies in China punished 983,000 individuals in 2025, with the number of high-ranking officials removed tripling compared to 2013. The plenary session is expected to take place approximately one year before the XXI CCP Congress in 2027.
