Chinese community in Valencia undergoes economic evolution
The Chinese community in the Valencian Community has undergone a significant economic and social evolution since the late 1990s. As the fourth largest region for Chinese residents in Spain, approximately 10% of the country's 200,000 Chinese citizens live in this area, primarily concentrated in Valencia and the province of Alicante, specifically in Elche.
To facilitate social integration and overcome language and cultural barriers, the Association for Chinese Integration in Levante was established in Elche in 2023. The association serves as a platform for its members, who often seek guidance on matters ranging from business management to schooling for their children.
Economically, the community has transitioned from a focus on low-cost footwear and bazaars in areas like the Carrús industrial estate to more diverse ventures. While some areas still face challenges related to counterfeit goods, there is a visible shift toward larger industrial warehouses and new agricultural ventures, such as pitaya greenhouses.
