Chinese crab demand lifts Swedish import prices

China’s expanding appetite for crabs has reshaped Sweden’s import market over the last decade. Petter Rönnqvist, chief executive of Seasam Food, says the growing Chinese consumption of Swedish crabs has altered supply sources and driven price changes.

While weather remains the main factor for crab sales during the traditional Swedish crayfish season, the country of origin now matters for pricing. Crabs sourced from different markets carry distinct price premiums, and Swedish importers are adjusting to the shifting demand driven by Chinese buyers.
