China CSI 300 Index enters bear market amid AI sell-off

China's benchmark CSI 300 Index has officially entered bear market territory after falling more than 20% from its June 2026 peak. The index has recorded ten consecutive weeks of losses, marking its first technical bear market since the 2020 pandemic-induced collapse.

The downturn is driven by a combination of structural economic challenges, including a protracted slump in domestic consumption, a long-running property sector crisis, and concerns over industrial profit margins. While China's third-quarter economic growth reached 4.5% year-over-year, the growth was largely supported by resilient exports rather than domestic demand.

A significant sell-off in technology and artificial intelligence stocks has exacerbated the decline. Investors are increasingly questioning the sustainability of massive capital expenditures in AI infrastructure and the ability of companies to translate these investments into profitable earnings. This sentiment has pressured major players such as Alibaba, SMIC, and various semiconductor firms.

Market volatility is further heightened by the high concentration of retail investors, who account for approximately 90% of daily trading volume in China. While state-backed funds have attempted to stabilize the market through ETF inflows, analysts suggest that a sustained recovery may require more robust fiscal stimulus and improved investor confidence.
