Chinese cuisine popularity rises in the United Kingdom
Chinese cuisine is seeing a surge in popularity in the United Kingdom, with recent data showing British consumers spent approximately £116 million at the Chopstix chain in 2025 alone. While some perceive Chinese takeaway as inherently unhealthy due to deep-frying and high levels of salt, sugar, and refined carbohydrates, nutritionists suggest that traditional Chinese dietary elements can be highly nutritious.
Dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine notes that traditional diets often include whole grains, low-fat proteins like tofu and fish, and fiber-rich legumes. Healthier options include wok-fried chicken with mixed vegetables, which provides a balance of protein and fiber, or steamed fish with ginger and bok choy, which offers high protein and omega-3 fatty acids. To maintain nutritional value, experts recommend requesting sauces separately to control sodium and sugar intake.
