Chinese e‑commerce giants Meituan and JD.com open new physical supermarkets in the Greater Bay Area
Meituan’s community‑store brand Happy Monkey launched its first brick‑and‑mortar outlet in Shenzhen’s Longgang district, occupying the ground floor of the Sanlian Commercial Plaza. The store offers more than 1,600 items, emphasizing low‑price in‑house brands such as a ¥16.99 roasted chicken, ¥9.99 milk, and daily‑tested fresh produce with strict food‑safety checks.
JD.com’s subsidiary Jiaba opened a large‑format supermarket in Shau Kei Wan, Hong Kong, leasing a 2,210‑square‑foot space at a monthly rent of ¥118,000 on a four‑year lease. The store carries a wide range of everyday goods and has attracted strong foot traffic comparable to nearby competitors. The opening is part of JD.com’s broader push to establish a physical retail network in Hong Kong, which includes a flagship store in Wan Chai and plans for several more locations over the next three years.
