Chinese electric vehicles to enter Canadian market in July

China's ambassador to Canada, Wang Di, told Reuters that Geely's Lotus brand electric vehicles will arrive in Canada next month, marking the first shipment of Chinese‑brand cars under the recent China‑Canada trade roadmap. The vehicles are slated for a delivery ceremony in Montreal, and the ambassador said other Chinese makers such as Chery and BYD are coordinating with Canadian authorities to complete required steps.

Canada has lifted the 100% additional tariff on imported Chinese EVs, granting an annual quota of 49,000 vehicles that will enjoy a 6.1% most‑favoured‑nation duty. A cargo ship named Glovis Treasure left Shanghai in early May carrying a small number of Lotus cars, and videos posted by the brand show 18 Eletre models being loaded. The Chinese side also expressed interest in joint‑venture projects and investment in Canada’s EV supply chain, while focusing first on building a sales network and assessing market demand.
