Chinese EV brands' lifetime warranties limited to original owners

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers are utilizing lifetime warranties for core electrical components—including batteries, motors, and controllers—as a primary competitive advantage against Japanese and Korean rivals. However, these warranties come with strict limitations that often exclude subsequent owners.

Common restrictive clauses across major brands like BYD, XPeng, and GAC Aion specify that the lifetime warranty applies only to the original owner and is void if the vehicle is used for commercial transport. For instance, BYD terminates the lifetime coverage upon any change of ownership, except between spouses. XPeng and GAC Aion further restrict eligibility by requiring annual mileage to remain below 30,000 km and mandating all maintenance be performed at official service centers.

These conditions significantly impact the secondary market, as vehicles entering the used car market typically revert to a basic warranty of 8 years or 150,000 km. The financial stakes are high; data from the China Automobile Insurance Research Institute indicates that batteries account for an average of 50.96% of an electric vehicle's total value.
