Chinese EV Makers Accelerate Overseas Sales, Targeting Canada and Global Markets
Geely became the first Chinese automaker to export electric‑vehicle crossovers to Canada, shipping 18 Lotus Eletre models in May. Canada has agreed to permit up to 49,000 China‑built EVs each year at a 6.1% tariff, but U.S. duties of 100% on Chinese EVs still block significant entry into the American market.
Leading Chinese brands BYD and Chery reported steep overseas growth in May. Chery delivered 181,571 vehicles abroad, an 81% year‑on‑year increase and 73% of its total monthly sales. BYD sold 160,177 units overseas, also up 81% YoY, accounting for 42% of its total sales. Higher prices in Europe and Southeast Asia are helping offset a slowdown in domestic Chinese demand.
The expanding export activity highlights Chinese EV makers’ push to capture foreign markets while navigating trade barriers and competing with domestic U.S. manufacturers.
