Chinese electric cars surge in Argentina as Tesla seeks tariff break
Chinese electric‑vehicle makers have rapidly expanded in Argentina following President Javier Milei’s economic opening. An annual tariff‑free quota for 50,000 electric cars – roughly 10 % of the new‑car market – has been set, favouring low‑priced models. BYD entered the country’s top‑ten sellers, reporting more than 8,200 units sold this year and overtaking brands such as Jeep, Honda and Nissan. China has become the main source of Argentina’s auto imports, reaching its highest share in at least five years.
Tesla is negotiating to import up to 50,000 electric and hybrid vehicles under a new government scheme, but the programme caps the FOB value of each unit at US$16,000, a limit most Tesla models exceed. The company has established a local entity, Tesla Argentina S.R.L., and plans a market launch in 2027 together with charging‑infrastructure development, while urging rule changes to allow higher‑priced models.
In Brazil, Chinese brand Leapmotor recorded 989 vehicle registrations in June, including 477 REEV units, and is preparing to launch the B10 REEV SUV in 2026 with an estimated 80 km electric range and up to 900 km total range, underscoring the broader regional growth of Chinese EVs.
