Chinese EV surge reshapes Thailand and Vietnam auto markets

Chinese electric vehicles are rapidly increasing their global market share, now accounting for about 25% of sales and challenging the dominance of Japanese manufacturers. In Thailand, the shift has pressured the auto sector, which contributes roughly 12% of GDP, leading to declining production and sales volumes. Yeap Swee Chuan, founder and CEO of Aapico Hitech – Thailand's largest listed auto‑parts maker – warned that traditional firms must cooperate more with Chinese companies to survive.

Meanwhile, Chinese automaker Chery is preparing to launch its iCaur brand in Vietnam. The first model, the iCaur V27, is a high‑ground‑clearance SUV that uses REEV (range‑extended electric vehicle) technology, combining a 34.3 kWh battery with a 1.5‑litre turbocharged engine that acts as a generator. The vehicle promises over 1,200 km of total range and targets young Vietnamese buyers seeking a rugged, off‑road style.

Both developments illustrate how Chinese EV strategies are prompting regional manufacturers and markets in Southeast Asia to adapt to new competitive dynamics and technology standards.
