Chinese EVs Capture Entire Australian Top‑Selling List

Australian electric‑vehicle registrations in June 2026 set a record, with seven models each selling over 1,000 units. All seven are Chinese‑owned or built, including the Tesla Model Y, which is manufactured at the Shanghai Gigafactory. Chinese brands BYD, Geely, Omoda Jaecoo, Zeekr and MG (now owned by SAIC) occupy six of the seven slots, while the Model Y leads the chart with 8,072 sales.

The surge reflects broader BYD market dynamics: models such as the Sealion 7 midsize SUV, a best‑seller in Australia, have been discontinued in China, yet continue strong export performance. Lower‑priced Chinese models—BYD Atto 2, Omoda Jaecoo J5 and MG4 Urban—are all under AU$40,000, expanding market share and pushing BYD close to Toyota for overall sales in Australia. Japanese EVs remain a minor presence, with only three models in the top 50.
