Chinese Farmland Near U.S. Military Bases Triggers Security Review

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said President Trump considers Chinese ownership of farmland close to military installations a clear national‑security problem. While Chinese‑linked holdings represent only about 247,000‑300,000 acres—roughly 3.6 % of privately held U.S. agricultural land—they are concentrated in certain counties near bases, prompting heightened scrutiny.

The administration aims to balance security concerns with farmer interests. It will continue to enforce the National Farm Security Action Plan, improve disclosure requirements, and work with states, but it will not ban legitimate sales that allow American producers to earn higher prices. Rollins quoted Trump’s focus on protecting farmers and noted that the president “understands that Chinese purchasing of our farmland is a significant problem.”
