Chinese film industry leaders report major losses and revenue declines
Major players in the Chinese film industry reported significant financial declines in their 2026 semiannual reports, reflecting a broader downturn in the national box office, which fell 40.62% year-on-year to 17.356 billion yuan.
China Film Group Co., Ltd. reported a net loss of 110 million yuan for the first half of the year, with revenue decreasing 11.93% to 1.512 billion yuan. The company attributed the loss primarily to lower film box office revenues during the Chinese New Year period compared to the previous year, specifically impacting its screening and service business segments.
Enlight Media also saw a sharp decline, with revenue dropping 90% to 324 million yuan and net profit falling 98.52% to approximately 33 million yuan. The company noted that the previous year's high performance was driven by the success of 'Ne Zha 2', creating a difficult year-on-year comparison. Its film and derivative business revenue fell 95.68%.
Other industry entities, including Hengdian Film, Beijing Culture, and Xingfu Lanhai, also reported revenue declines and shifts from profit to losses during the same period.
